Monash University, Caulfield Campus (Buildings H&J)

Equiset was contracted to design, project manage and construct the $95 million redevelopment at Monash University's Caulfield Campus. Known as Buildings H & J, the project includes an eleven-level education building and an eight-level car park.

To ensure effective and strategic outcomes, Equiset began this project with a comprehensive study of the campus, identifying building envelopes, property acquisitions and an overall campus development plan. The final strategy increased usable floor space by 40 per cent and incorporated common areas, purpose built facilities and a car park.

This innovative project drew on new technologies that delivered cost and time efficiencies, energy savings and environmental advantages. For example, the building structure uses an innovative precast column and floor beam structure system. Fitout for the lower levels was briefed, designed and documented and then integrated into the base building works. Equiset engaged consultants to ensure appropriate acoustics between plant rooms and the academic and lecture areas and double glazed units improve energy efficiency.

The Equiset team successfully managed the unique aspects of this site, including up to 200 people working at different construction stages in a confined area surrounded by residential, commercial and public space, and the need to accommodate normal activity in the area.

The building project commenced on December 2002 and was handed over in December 2004 prior to the commencement of the academic year – all delivered on time and on budget.
