No 1 Martin Place, Sydney

The $700 million redevelopment of No.1 Martin Place created a new benchmark for mixed use urban developments and a new civic precinct in the heart of Sydney.

Sydney's GPO had been a national architectural icon for more than a century, so redevelopment demanded a builder with exceptional heritage skills. The Grollo Group had unparalleled experience in heritage restoration and development and their consortium, Number One Martin Place Pty Ltd, won the contract from a field of 15.

Grocon's vision for No. 1 Martin Place was to bring "the heart of Sydney back to where it belonged – at the grand old GPO". To do this, they needed to overcome many challenges, including minimal street frontages, a central city location with huge volumes of people and cars, and the need to excavate and remove masses of rock.

No.1 Martin Place opened in September 1999 and in 2001 the Grollo Group project was awarded the Property Council of Australia Rider Hunt Award.
